Most modern railroad bridges are made out of steel for strength and durability and just like full size railroad bridges
our model railroad bridges are made of steel for strength and durability. And just like full size railroad bridges
our model railroad bridges are made to last many years outdoors with proper care and maintenance.

After our bridge components are cut, sanded and cleaned they are prime painted with high quality rust inhibitor primer paint.

Your bridge will arrive prime painted and ready for you to choose and apply a compatable final top coat paint.  This allows you to select any color or texture desired.

We recommend a good automotive or enamel paint be applied after the bridge is assembled. You may also consider having your bridge powder coated after assembly by a local paint shop. Application of heavy paint top coats, paint textures or powder coatings prior to assembly is not recommended since this may prevent the proper assembly of the tight design clearances between the structural steel, rivet plates and rivets.

The local enviorment will determine the frequency that you will have to repaint your bridge.

  • Water and moisture is the biggest factor that will determine how often your bridge will require painting.
  • Annual repainting may be required if you live in a heavy rainfall area or along sea coast with salt in the air.
  • Annual repainting may be required if your bridge is located in damp area such as near a water fall or a poorly drained area that stays wet.
  • Less frequent repainting may be required for those who live in sunny and dry climates.

OVERVIEW:

Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Spray is a tough, rust-inhibiting base that works well under most automotive paints and Rust-Oleum Stops Rust finishes. Spray on and wait just 15 minutes before you apply a top coat or wet sand to an ultrasmooth finish. Safe to apply on all but galvanized metals. It features a comfort tip with a wider finger pad to reduce fatigue cause by continuous spraying. In addition, there is an any-angle spray feature that allows you to spray in any direction, even upside down.

Rust-Oleum® Stops Rust® Automobile Primer provides a tough, rust-inhibitive base for most brands of automotive lacquers and enamels. Smooth-sanding for the ultimate finish. For maximum protection, topcoat with a Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel. If using an auto lacquer, a test application for compatibility is recommended. StopsRust® Automobile Primer also features a comfort tip with a wider finger pad to reduce fatigue caused by continuous spraying and an any-angle spray feature that allows you to spray in any direction, even upside down.

Painting Conditions: Use outdoors or in a well-ventilated area such as an open garage. Use when temperature is between 50°F (10°C) and 90°F (32°C) and humidity is below 85% to ensure proper drying. Do not apply to surfaces that, when heated, exceed 200°F (93°C) or galvanized metal. Avoid spraying in very windy, dusty conditions. Cover surrounding area to protect from spray mist.

Preparation: Remove loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. Lightly sand glossy surfaces.

Clean area to be painted with mineral spirits to remove all oil, grease, wax and dirt. Clean with soap and water, rinse and let dry.

WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust.

LEAD IS TOXIC. Contact the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead

Priming: Shake can vigorously for one minute after mixing ball begins to rattle. Shake often during use. Hold can upright 10-16" from surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Keep the can the same distance from the surface. Keep the can in motion while spraying. Apply 2 or more light coats a few minutes apart.

Dry & Recoat Times: based on 70°F (21°C) – 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to handle in 15-30 minutes. When dry, surface can be immediately recoated, top coated or wet sanded. Wait 4 hours before dry sanding.

Clean-up: Wipe off tip before storing. Clean up wet paint with Xylol or mineral spirits. Throw away empty can per your local, state or federal regulations. Do not burn or place in home trash compactor.

Clogging: If valve clogs, twist and pull off spray tip and rinse it in a solvent such as mineral spirits. Do not stick a pin or other objects into the stem.
